Reims or Épernay for a Champagne Day Trip from Paris?

Choose between city heritage and a Champagne-focused day, using your reservations and your group's needs to decide.

Choose Reims if you want a Champagne visit alongside cathedral and city heritage. Choose Épernay if the Avenue de Champagne and nearby vineyard villages are your priorities. If you already have a must-visit house, start with its address and available visit time: that reservation may settle the choice before anything else.

For transport, waiting and a hotel return arranged around your visits, see our private Champagne day trip from Paris. This guide helps you choose the destination before building the full day.

Neither city wins every comparison. A reservation you can comfortably reach is more useful than a long list of famous names.

Choose Reims for a city and Champagne balance

Reims gives you a reason to explore beyond tastings. Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral and the city's Champagne cellars offer different experiences within the same destination. The official Champagne guide to Reims explains its royal heritage and the former chalk quarries used by Champagne houses.

Our recommendation is to keep the city visit meaningful: leave time to walk, eat and reach the cellar meeting point. A photograph outside the cathedral between two tight appointments is a different day from a proper heritage visit. Ask for a separate guide if you want interpretation of the city or its monuments.

Use the Paris to Reims private driver page when Reims is your main destination, and specify whether the chauffeur should wait and return you to Paris.

Choose Épernay for the avenue and nearby villages

Épernay suits a day centred on Champagne culture. Its Avenue de Champagne brings together prominent house buildings; Château Perrier houses the Champagne Wine and Regional Archaeology Museum. Walking along the avenue does not grant access to the cellars: arrange the visits you want separately. See the official guide to Épernay and its region.

Hautvillers can add village streets and vineyard views to an Épernay-based day. Its tourism office distinguishes Saint-Sindulphe church, with Dom Pérignon's tomb, from the privately owned abbey, which cannot be visited. Check the Hautvillers visitor information before planning that stop. Aÿ-Champagne is another possibility, with the interactive Champagne experience at Pressoria described in the official Reims regional guide.

Treat these as choices rather than compulsory additions. For a day based around Épernay, start with Paris to Épernay chauffeur planning.

Should you visit both in one day?

Only if the appointment times leave room. Champagne.fr places Épernay approximately 40 minutes from Reims; your actual journey depends on the addresses and traffic. Add that movement before reserving a visit in each city, along with lunch, check-in time and both journeys from Paris.

If the second city squeezes out the stop you care about most, stay with one area. A chauffeur can connect the addresses, but cannot extend a producer's reserved visit slot. Compare the full reserved hours and return conditions using our guide to private driver day costs.

Plan for everyone in your group

Before paying for visits, ask each venue:

  • Whether non-drinkers can join and what alternatives are available.
  • Whether children are admitted to that specific experience and any age conditions.
  • Whether there are stairs, lifts, uneven surfaces or extended walking.
  • Whether the visit is offered in English on your date.

A private car helps between stops; it does not establish that a cellar or monument is accessible. Share mobility needs, passenger ages and child-seat requests with the transport team too.

Turn your choice into a quote request

Send your date, Paris hotel, passenger count, preferred area and any confirmed reservations. Ask for transport, waiting, parking and return travel to be itemised. Cellar tickets, tastings, guiding and meals are separate unless expressly included in your written proposal. A chauffeur booking does not automatically provide a guided Champagne tour.

Request a quote for your Champagne day, or compare the other private day trips from Paris if your group prefers castles or history.
